There is an agenda to everything. This movie is no exception. If you have not watched it but plan to; then I suggest you watch it first, and then come back afterward to consider why this movie was produced. Not that you won’t see some of it for yourself, but should you want my take; then that would be the time to come back to this post.
For those who have seen it, I’m certain that your reaction included a great empathy for the Hermaphrodite Cardinal, who will it appears save the Catholic Church. At the same time, though you may not have thought of it, you were led to very much dislike those Cardinals, who were being pushed politically to be the next Pope. Among them; a deceiver, who was a staunch (mean) conservative; an ambitious truth teller, who you likely at first and maybe even in the end liked, but who had issues with power; also there was one who had given in to sexual lust, and now though repentant was unacceptable. But then there was the questioning manager of the Conclave (The Dean of the University), who had no desire to become Pope, who was “falsely accused”, who was a bit skeptical and ever looking for truth. Who was most trusted, and who finally willingly accepts the possibility that he is the man for the position: willingly he will sacrifice himself in order to defeat the conservative branch of the Church, that they had mostly all worked so hard to destroy. The conservative was this man. His ways were depicted as being disrespectful of others (Power hungry and un-empathetic).
You were now set up to fall in love with the agenda for which this movie was produced.
You are now not just empathetic toward the only one perfectly presented (obscure) character, him, who very innocently learned of his creation by his God as a hermaphrodite for just such a time as this. “The serpent was more subtle” than all the animals in the garden.
Your emotions have now been played upon. You are questioning your motives. You are torn: God did create these ones, whom He asks us to love as ourselves. But wait He also created evil in this world. Or did He only allow evil and sin to become the result by allowing for sin as “the certain outcome” and not just a possible one, because He desired men who would freely and willingly serve Him because they would love Him, for His offer of yes, grace for our sinful choices and yes, mercy because without it we have no hope for a better future, and most importantly because He loved us enough to create us anyway, knowing how rebellious we would be before we would find Him to be our beloved.
Genesis 3:14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all the livestock, And more than any animal of the field; On your belly you shall go, And dust you shall eat All the days of your life;
Genesis 3:15 And I will make enemies Of you and the woman, And of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise Him on the heel.” (NASB2020)
I think it time that we come to understand that the offspring of Satan are your enemies. And it is also time to recognize that once an enemy, whom we are to love has given their own self over to being the offspring of Satan; then you begin to understand the true Spiritual battle that faces us, who are created in the image of God. And we must do this in order to become the sons of God rather than that offspring, who will represent the enemy of God and of man himself.
