As I look upon the adversaries of Christ as they are portrayed here by Spurgeon, I can’t help but understand that I too was there with the rod in my hand laying it across my Lord’s cheek.  I was with Peter as he denied Him just beyond where this mock trial was being held.  I was there in his lies and his denials.  I was there with the others as they fled to their hiding. Afraid that they would be called upon to join Him in His suffering.  I was there in the doubts that were had concerning why it had all come to this.  I cannot despise these, though they should be despised. I can only rejoice that I also was there with Peter and John as they rushed to the empty tomb. And I was again there with the twelve as He breathed on them and said “receive the Holy Spirit”. And I remained with them as they waited in the upper room for the promised baptism with His Holy Spirit.

I am truly thankful that I have experienced all of this and still I await His Coming to me as I join these, who have crossed through deaths portal into His presence where I will along with them hear Him say my child, your sins are forgiven, well done you have been a good and a faithful servant.  But I truly understand that without Him in my life I am nothing.
