There seems to be a good bit of confusion within the church over the Holy Spirit who was given to believers.

John 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) (KJV)

What Jesus had stated than did need explaining. This verse was that explanation, because, as was much of what Jesus taught to the disciples, it was not clear to them at the time it was said. Here is what prompted that explanation: John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (KJV)

What that meant then was unclear to His disciples. John much later explains in his gospel how many of the things that they were taught by Jesus were not fully understood until after His glorification:

John 12:16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. (KJV)

Jesus in fact made clear to them that He must be glorified.

John 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. (KJV)

So it was clear that His glorification would require His death. He must fall to the ground and die to begin the process.

John 13:31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. (KJV)

So, why did Jesus say that now He is glorified? Judas had just left to betray Him. In John 7:39 Jesus has said that the Holy Spirit could not be given until He was glorified. Does the fact that He states here that He is glorified mean that it had already occurred? It is obvious that the process had begun but, He has not died, it is not completed, the Holy Spirit is not yet given. In fact, there is evidence that for this to happen, a return to the Father may be necessary in order that the perfect sacrifice of Himself be presented unto God. Listen:

Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” John 20:17 NASB

There is disagreement among translators as to the exact wording of this verse. KJV and others state “do not touch me” or “touch me not I have not yet been to my Father”. I tend to believe that this was His meaning, because later He tells Thomas to touch Him in His wounds. This would indicate that He had now been to the Father. He also later around that same time breaths on His disciples telling them to receive the Holy Spirit. This signifies that He has now been glorified. For the Holy Spirit could not be given until He was glorified. And here He gives them the Holy Spirit.

This seems to be the instant of the disciples rebirth. Up until then they were not saved. Listen:

“But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not:
and when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren.”
Luke 22:23

This was Jesus telling Peter before his betrayal what his future held. His conversion was yet to come.

But this giving of the Holy Spirit at this time (before Pentecost) is important to the understanding of the believer concerning the the working of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Why? — you say. And I will answer that question with another question. Why did Jesus after having given these His disciples the Holy Spirit in John 20:22, then command?:

Acts 1:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. (KJV)

There was a distinction made in scripture between the receiving of the Holy Spirit (the new birth) upon believing, which these disciples did (they believed) when Jesus appeared to them. And that distinction was the promised baptism of the Holy Spirit, for power to minister to one another, and to others.

Jesus, the Word, is this living water. He states to the disciples: “you are made clean by the word that I have spoken to you”. Paul states of the church:

so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

Ephesians 5:26 NASB

Rivers of living water are to flow forth through us by the power of the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus promised. The Holy Spirit is given as the new birth to the new believer, but His baptism is necessary for ministry. In fact, His overflowing or baptism is necessary in order that He can teach us the needed truth of the word, in order that it may flow forth from us in rivers.

I am not going to tell you that you must have the baptism. He is your teacher. He will tell you what you need. It is my place to let His word that He teaches me flow like a river. It is my place to be filled with His Spirit. It is my place to not grieve His Spirit. I am not going to tell you, but I am going to let one of the past centuries saints speak. Corrie Ten Boom wrote a letter in 1974 concerning the Pre-Tribulation rapture. Most of you don’t know Corrie, but she wrote The Hiding Place and other books in addition to speaking all around the world. She spent two years along with her family, in a Nazi Concentration camp, as a believer who, was part of a family, who hid and protected the Jews from Satan’s purge during world war 2. This is what she wrote in that letter concerning the Holy Spirit.

For one to tell you that you and he have gotten all of the Holy Spirit that you or he will ever receive, is an arrogant statement, because it limits God, and it makes him unteachable by the Holy Spirit. Without the power of the Holy Spirit one can read the word, but he will never fully understand it. He is not walking in the Spirit.

Remember, much of the teaching of our day comes from a closed mind to the workings of the Holy Spirit in their own life and in the life of the believer. The believer who is yielding to the biblical workings of the Holy Spirit is not perfect, but He is teachable.
