•b. chamber
•c. divine protection or defense(fig.)
•The usage in the O.T. Is bridal chamber (2). Canopy (1).
There is really very little usage in the Old Testament, but implied in Jewish tradition is a divine protection or defense associated with the virginity cloth.
So, why does this matter to you and me? Today many translate the word to mean “covering” — but what was it to cover? Consider with me how the difference effects our understanding of the Ancient Jewish Wedding, and how that understanding then becomes the proof for when and where the wedding of the Lamb is to take place.
Here are the choices — if the current dispensational understanding which is based on the Chuppah as being a covering over the bride and groom, which is the modern day definition of the word, then there is no basis on which to question a wedding for the bride of Christ that “they say” must take place in the Father’s house.
However, if we consider the very first wedding for Israel then we find reason to question that understanding based on the ancient use of the Chuppah. So what was that first wedding? God made a choice between Jacob and Esau. He chose Jacob who He later renamed Israel. So Jacob’s wedding was the earliest of the Ancient Jewish Weddings.
The story is well known. Jacob fled from his fathers house after stealing Esau’s birth right, and went to Laban’s house. He saw Rachel and wanted her for his wife. You all know the story. He consummated two marriages while with Laban. He paid the bridal price and consummated the marriage in the brides chamber in the house of the bride.
Following Israel’s 400 year slavery in Egypt, and the Red Sea crossing, Moses gave the law. Included in the law was Deuteronomy 22:13-21. This is also confirmed in the (Dead Sea Scrolls: The Temple Scroll, 11QT = 11Q19). This passage speaks of the evidence of the brides virginity which is retained by the brides parents as protection against any later false accusations by the bridegroom.
The modern Chuppah often has embroidered on the overhead canopy the names of the bride and groom. This is a practice taken from the Ancient Chuppah where the bride and or the brides mother would embroider the names on the virginity cloth.
The consummated marriage took place in the bridal chamber on the Chuppah in the brides house, and then the festivities began in the brides house and moved to the father of the grooms house where the groom had prepared a room for the bride.
Following Jewish tradition Jesus’ marriage to His bride will be consummated on the earth following His coming. And true according to scripture in Revelation it will eventually move to the new Jerusalem.
Song of Songs 3:4 It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me. (KJV)

2.A modern Chuppah has many meanings that all have their origin in ancient Jewish wedding custom of the virginity cloth.
a.The Chuppah has undergone a gradual evolution of meaning. It began as the “virginity cloth” that lay under the bride when she consummated the marriage. Then the cloth change its position from under the bride on the bed, to over the bride on the bed as a canopy. Then it came to symbolize the room metaphorically and finally the sheet was moved from over the couple’s bed in a private bedroom, out in public as a four posted canopy over the bridal couple at the modern wedding ceremony. So the sheet began under the bride, then over the bride in private, then over the bridal couple in public.

Jerry, I hesitated to say this at first but there is a problem here. You wrote:

Wasn’t Isaac and Rebeccah’s wedding first? Abraham’s servant brought a bride for Isaac – Rebeccah – from Laban’s house to Isaac in the land of promise.
Isn’t it safest to remain with the text of the Bible rather than go to the Jewish tradition about this cloth?

Problem is if you do that Maria, then you have no legal system which required the death of a bride who was not a Virgin. The virginity cloth had no meaning without the Jewish law. Of course your right, Isaac was Abraham’s first born, Abraham was actually a Gentile, and Isaac was The son of the Covenant. We born again Gentiles are actually heirs as well according to Paul of the line of Issac the child of promise. But the law came through Jacob or Israel. I think Jacob is significant because God renamed him Israel. But in all honesty we have no other biblical record of the ancient Jewish wedding. So why did I want to explore the ancient Jewish wedding, because Bibleguy and all other Dispensationalist teachers teach that the ancient Jewish wedding proves the pre-Trib Rapture because the wedding according to them takes place in the Fathers house. Therefore they say Jesus wedding must take place in heaven. You are of course free to decide what is the truth.

Okay, Jerry.
Still it remains that, the first Jewish wedding is Isaac and Rebeccah in the home of the father Abraham and son Isaac. It seems richer with types than the weddings of Jacob – Israel – and Leah and Rachel. Can this help in any way?

Ok, Maria do you see Rebecca a better type of the bride of Christ, if so how so? I personally see Leah and Rachel as a better type, because the bride is made up of two components the Jew and the Gentile being one. Of course Leah and Rachel were never really one. I guess I never really saw the type thing as being always legitimate. Take Lot who is considered a type of the church who escapes before Tribulation, but truthfully Sodom can not be equated with the Tribulation, because the Tribulation was not total destruction. Men are left to be destroyed following Tribulation. And who then does lots wife represent? Sorry can’t help myself. But why do Abraham and Isaac to you represent the first of Israel’s marriages?

Jerry, I had done only the most basic thinking about it – just found this here:

It’s pretty good, Jerry.

It is interesting, but neither is it scripture. It is to be judged by the scripture which I will get to in a bit. So when I read that Eleazar is representative of the Holy Spirit, I disregard much of what is said. You had asked me why I turn to Jewish tradition rather than the scripture. So why do we trim to any writing rather than the scripture itself? I did this thinking that the Scripture that I referenced in Deuteronomy would be read.
It is the scripture that makes the tradition come alive. It is not speculation as is most typing of certain individuals to be something representing God or His purposes. Isaac did not die as Jesus did. Yet he is typed as Jesus. The Lamb died for Isaac. If anything in the events of Abraham and Isaac is true — it is the Lamb is representative of Jesus our lamb who substituted for our sin. Hope you see my point, but consider this passage that I listed for reading with this article:
“ If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then turns against her, and charges her with shameful deeds and publicly defames her, and says, ‘I took this woman, but when I came near her, I did not find her a virgin,’ then the girl’s father and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of the girl’s virginity to the elders of the city at the gate. The girl’s father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man for a wife, but he turned against her; and behold, he has charged her with shameful deeds, saying, “I did not find your daughter a virgin.” But this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city. So the elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him,
Deuteronomy 22:13-18 – NASB
This scripture explains why there was a Chuppah kept as evidence and why the wedding was stated by tradition to be consummated at the house of the bride. Perhaps I erred by even suggesting which was the first, but the traditions surrounding this place the weddings of ancient times at the home of the bride.
